Nerve Conditions
Neuroma
A neuroma is a painful swelling in the tissue surrounding a nerve in the foot. It most often is seen between the 3rd and 4th toes. Bones in the foot at the base of these toes can press together and irritate the nerve. Shoes that are too tight or repeated stress on the foot can cause a neuroma to form. Higher heels or pointed toed shoes are more likely to cause this condition. Neuromas can be quite painful, with shooting pain, burning, tingling, and numbness often being present.
